To ensure a safe delivery and a healthy baby it is very important that the would-be mother quits smoking. It is best to conceive after quitting smoking but pregnancy is the best reason to throw away cigarettes. Not only direct smoking but also second hand and third hand smoking is known to be dangerous to the mother and baby.

Babies born to mothers who smoke are likely to be born with defects, prematurely or low birth weight. Babies born prematurely are at a high risk of developing serious health problems like lifelong disabilities such as cerebral palsy, mental retardation and learning problems. In some cases it leads to death also.

Breathing in someone else’s smoke is also dangerous. Exposure to second hand smoke during pregnancy may lead to low birth weight of the child. They are also more likely to die from SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). They are at a greater risk of developing asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, ear infections and respiratory symptoms. They may experience slow lung growth also.

Research shows that third hand smoke is also dangerous during pregnancy. Third hand smoke is the contact with toxic gases and particles left behind from cigarette smoking. The toxic remains like lead, arsenic and carbon monoxide get stuck to clothes, hair, carpet and sofas even after the room is cleared of cigarette smoke. That is the reason that a smokers house, clothes and car smell of cigarettes. Babies or children exposed to third hand smoking may develop problems like asthma, other breathing issues, learning disorders and cancer.

There are a number of Methods to quit smoking among which the natural methods are best for the mother and the baby.
