Thank you for posting this. I'm getting tired of reading of the people who are straying from the cleanse and others who are using it as a diet for weight loss. To each his own but it is nice to see that some of us are truly motivated by the healthy aspects of the cleanse and continue a healthy diet and do the best to live toxin free afterwards. Thanks again for taking the time to reiterate that. :D

I'm using it as a diet for weight loss

Do you ever feel that you cannot finish this diet? It is very hard. Believe me i know. I tried it 3-4 times with no success. I could not get past day 3 but then i found the Secret. It is a godsend and makes this diet so much easier. It is an ebook that i found on the internet. Master Cleanse Secrets. Check out my hub page for more info. THere is a link at the bottom of the hub page that will change your life forever.

For all you newcomers I thought I'd share a few things:

-Please follow the MC to the letter, as Mr. Burroughs intended. There is no need to add or take away anything from the program, doing so can compromise the success of your cleanse and even your health.

-If you are on ANY medication, talk to your doctor BEFORE starting the MC, as the cleanse can render many medications (like birth control pills!) ineffective, or otherwise interfere with the drugs you are taking. Especially speak with your regular doctor if you plan to stop taking any meds while on the cleanse!

-Probiotics after any cleanse are imperative. You can search the forum for more details but suffice to say that without them you can get very sick by allowing bad bacteria to take control of your digestive tract once the cleanse ends. Have these on hand BEFORE you begin the cleanse, so that if you fall short of your goal you have them ready and waiting.

-Remember that the Tea is designed to loosen and the Salt Water flushes. Either part taken without the other is only half as effective. Even though the book says you can sub the tea if you must for the SW, he does not mean every day - it's more of an emergency alternative for when you simply cannot do the SWF for some reason.

-Organic lemons are key, as non-organic lemons are loaded with chemicals you are trying to rid your body of. No point in cleansing if you are going to use chemical-laden fruit. YES, the chemicals and toxins DO get into the fruit. Lemon skin is porous, things seep in, and the ground non-organic fruit is grown in is also rich in toxins which seep up into the plant with its water intake.

-You should make your lemonade as close to the time you intend to drink it as possible. That said, it is acceptable to squeeze your lemon juice in the morning for the day's tonic. You could then bring the juice, water, maple, and cayenne with you in separate containers, mixing as needed during the day. I like to squeeze a day's worth of lemons in the morning, then prepare two 3-glass batches to bring to work/school as breakfast and lunch, waiting until the time I am drinking to add the cayenne so it doesn't sit and get too spicy. When I get home I make one or two more glasses of tonic for dinner to use up the rest of the lemon juice. This way its all as fresh as possible - within reason of our busy schedules!

-Remember 10 days is the suggested minimum. I always liken it to the first 20 minutes of any workout at the gym - relatively useless on it's own, it's a warm-up period for your body and it's what happens after that warm-up that is really where the benefits and action happen. Ten days is the time it takes to flush the digestive tract out and for your body to fully switch over to using it's fat resources for energy, thereby releasing toxins stored within. The longer past 10 days you go, the more cleansed your body will become, and the more deeply stored toxins will be able to be removed. Give your body a chance to really cleanse, you won't regret it!

-PLEASE READ THE BOOK! So many questions are answered there, and you can save yourself a lot of time and effort trying to figure things out on your own. Plus, there is a lot of important information about properly breaking the fast.

-YES:
use bottled/filtered/distilled water
use fresh lemons
drink all of the salt water mix
you can cut your maple syrup qty in half to induce greater weight loss if needed (i go full strength the first 3 days to get me through!)

-DONT:
skip steps
alter ingredients or formulas
add supplements not part of the cleanse
mistake detox symptoms for "being sick"!!!

The first 3 days are the worst (2 and 3 typically). Expect headaches, nausea, and flu-like symptoms. The first load of toxins to go are those readily accessible in your digestive tract. As these loosen and flush out, you will feel the effects! Caffeine withdrawal also hurts! As the detox progresses, it's not over! As your body uses up stored fat, stored toxins are also released into the system creating periods of detox symptoms. Landmark days tend to be 5, 7, 10, and then intermittent periods throughout the rest of a lengthy cleanse. Don't give up and mistake these cleansing waves as "My body is telling me to stop" or "The detox is making me sick"! Your body is just getting RID of The Sick and you're going to feel it. Always drink a lot of water and take it easy. The more water you drink, the faster these symptoms will pass.

I hope all this info helps, I am sure other MC'ers will have pearls of wisdom to share, but I thought I'd get this out there for anyone new.
We're all going to do fantastic!

Kari are we allowed to eat or drink anything while on the MC?

You drink the lemonade and that is it, Correct?

Each day starts with a quart of salt water on an empty stomach. Through the day you drink the lemonade and water. Each day ends with herbal lax tea before bed. On occasion you may have a cup of mint tea but this should not be a daily thing, think of it as a treat for rough days.

I'm on my 4th cleanse and I've noticed it gets easier every time. It amazes me how many people view this as a weight loss program and judge it by how much weight is lost and kept off when it's designed to be a cleanse and should therefore be judged by it's effectiveness in detoxing and cleansing the body. I happen to think the MC would be a great way to kick off a weight loss plan but hope that those using it for that realize that permanent changes would have to go into effect once the cleanse is over to maintain the weight loss and/or to continue to lose weight. It's becoming a pet peeve of mine when I see people say the MC is no good because they gained back all the weight they lost. Nevermind that it rid their bodies of toxins, which is what it's really designed for, and gave them a very healthy starting point to make healthier choices instead of going back to old habits.

It also amazes me how many people decide to do the MC without reading Stanley Burroughs' book when it only costs about $6.50 brand new and is a simple fast easy read. It's really worth getting. I reread mine all the time to keep myself reminded of what's truly by-the-book and what's internet myth or not-quite-master-cleanse. I always feel like thanking Stanley Burroughs for keeping the book(let) short and sweet and therefore inexpensive instead of throwing in a bunch of extra stuff to pad it and boost the price. I also noticed a link to a PDF copy of the book that a person can view and download for free. I love that!

I'm new at this; it's my first day. I was grateful to read your blog and to have it all written out in such basics. Simplicity is the new key to my life and this was the most essential way for me to begin. Thanks for posting. Have a blessed holiday season!

Hi!! This is my first cleanse and I'm on day 3. The only problems I've had so far is a MAJOR headache!!! :( I was wondering if I could drink the water out of my fridge. It has a filter on it that just got changed. I started the day after Thanksgiving and can't say I enjoy the SWF, but if it helps make me healthy...I'll do it. I'm so glad I found this sight!! :D Gonna shoot for 20 days...hope I make it!!!

Hi, this is the first time I have done the MC. Today I am just eating veggies and fruit, tomorrow I will juice, and Wednesday will be my first day with the lemon drinks. I thought by easing into it, it may be easier for me. I'm so happy that I found this forum, you are all so inspirational!!!

I have a few questions......

1. I love Pelligrino water (sparkling). Is this something I can drink on the cleanse? (not to add to the SWF or the lemonade drinks, just plain)

2. I just purchased the Celtic light grey sea salt. It's pretty chunky, does it mix well with the water for the SWF? Any suggestions on getting it to "melt" into the water so I'm not drinking those chunks?

Thank you so much for all your help!

Lisa

I wanted to ask you all if you can help me regarding the sugar cane, i am living in Hong Kong and cant find grade b maple syrup here and it'll be really expensive to order online, if i'm getting the right meaning of wat i read about the sugar cane, i can safely use it right? It was mentioned in the book as follows:
An ideal formula involves 10 oz freshly extracted juice from the sugar cane along with lemon juice and cayenne pepper.

Hi. So excited, been reading up on MC and getting ready to begin Saturday (Jan. 3). For "practice" I did the SWF one morning last week (out of curiousity)....and am now concerned about the daily ones coming up. The salt does not dissolve, making it difficult to "chug", as I had to keep stopping to stir. I really would like to be able to just stir it up and drink it down without getting all of the salt settling at the bottom and in the last mouthful (YUCK!!!). Is there a recommendation? I am using non-iodized "sea salt" w/no clumping agents, etc. Are there any tips as to how to make this easier??

This is a life style for me. Every year my church goes on a 21 day fast. We fast for our loves ones and for those that we want God to come into their lives through healing, spiritual growth or whatever the need may be spiritually. I'm taking this opportunity to jump start a better way of living. Mind, Body and Spirit. . I have a question. Since I have my gall bladder removed and already have regular bowel movements. Do I still need to take the laxative tea. I'm going on this particular fast to continue with cleansing my body of all impurities from the pills that I have had to take due to the pain in my joints and spasm. I have lost weight do to the life style change that I have already had to change. So back to my question I'm not sure if with all of this and the absence of the gallbladder do I need to Laxative to start off with?

Thanks Kari Jo for your insightful information. I am getting ready to go into day 3 of the cleanse. I especially appreciated your info. on the lemons. The first day I used organic but not knowing the difference, the next day I used nonorganic. The organic were even cheaper, so this mornining I'm going to purchase more. As far as sticking to it, I've done okay, surprisingly. Sometimes I get a thought that I'm going to freak out and eat something but the thought passes. I guess that's normal. Anyway wish me well, and thanks again. :D

I as well am using this to focus on some spiritual things.

As for the person who mentioned the comment in the Burroughs book about his not being a morning person -- I THOUGHT that comment came from the person who wrote the introduction! I don't think Mr Burroughs said that.

Thanks to all who post useful information here. It's a great help to me, just beginning my second day.

Peace --

I've been doing this cleanse for 7 days now and I'm having the same experience as everyone else doing the M/C, despite not doing the SWF or taking the pepper and using the capsules instead. I also take the SENNA tea and believe me it's getting everything out. So far I've lost 14 pounds and no folks I don't use Organic lemons either. Just regular ole lemons from a tree and trust me when I tell you I feel cleansed inside and out. My skin is softer and my b/ms (after the 4th day) are frequent and plentiful. Reading the more hard core m/c cleansers mails, made me laugh. It's so silly to imagine your poo is purer and your body therefore more cleansed than mine or anyone elses because of the temp of your juice or the kind of water your using or what time you prepare your juice. The truth is our livers do a very good job of cleaning our insides, the m/c is however an excellent flush. Of course you have to follow the recipe, for example you can't eat crackers or suck soup down people, but you will be delighted to know there are available short cuts to make the experience more pleasant. Example. WHOLE FOODS sell organic pure lemon juice for 4 bucks and you don't have to squeeze anything. I actually used that for the first 5 days. Was great, pure, no additives, just lemon, added it the water and maple syrup and we were good. There's also the cayenne capsules if adding cayenne to the lemonade makes you gag, that's what I took. What's the big deal? I don't do the SWF either, makes me puke. Like I said I'm taking in enough liquids to get everything I need out. And I repeat I lost 14 pounds already. I don't mean to be mean to the guy who called everyone "newbies" but seriously, there are a lot of things I want to be good at in life, obsessing over the perfection of a lemon drink so I can cr*p better isn't one of them.[/b]
